I’m Going The Distance to help patients with cancer at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

I’m going to get moving and track every kilometre I do this August to reach my goal for the month.

Last year I was diagnosed with a rare Mucosal Melanoma - out of nowhere a routine Pap smear thankfully picked it up. Of course it’s rare, 1 in 4 million.

My world turned upside down, and yet there was a calm in the storm. What about my children? And so many life goals still to achieve, not to mention my husband, my beautiful loving parents, my siblings and other family, including my dearest bestest friend and my amazing work family. 

My oncologist, Professor Rhonda Farrell took the lead and I landed in Lifehouse for my surgery and recovery, this was the eye of my storm, the calm.  The care they give, the knowledge, research and facilities are transforming and it really is like another world. For me it’s a safe haven and a place filled with hope as well as ground breaking, life changing technology.

Fast forward to July 2023 and we have had the devastating news that the melanoma has spread to my abdomen, left auxiliary lymph nodes and multiple masses in my heart. This time round I’m under the care of Cardio Oncologist and Melanoma Oncology specialist at Prince of Wales, not Lifehouse. This medical team is equally committed and throwing everything at this cancer! I’ve commenced double immunotherapy treatment and I feel lucky to live where we do and have access to the science and medicine we do - the MABs are amazing drugs, they are doing their job and targeting specific receptors of the bad cells and knocking them out 💪🏽Luckily they're not hammering every cell in my body, just the ones specific to the baddies. 

I’ll still honour my commitment to walk and raise money for everyone who will benefit from the care and facilities at Lifehouse. 

Lifehouse, was an important part of my journey so please help me reach my goal by making a donation. My journey will help patients get through theirs.

I got to know the Lifehouse through one of the most challenging periods in my life, and I am in awe of the advancements in cancer care they provide. While today my cancer battle continues at POW, Lifehouse was a pivotal starting point. 

Lifehouse is a not-for profit hospital and therefore it relies heavily on donations. Despite this, it has become a critical facility for cancer patients and grown significantly over the last 10 years.

Going the distance, in support of Lifehouse and its patients (past, present and future) is my way of giving back and with your help, we’re contributing to the bigger picture!
